Charity Spotlight: Slide Away – Supporting Bereaved Children in Kent

At The Kent Review, our mission has always gone beyond showcasing great days out and hidden gems — it’s about community, connection, and making a real difference. That’s why, starting with this issue and continuing in every issue going forward, we’re proud to donate 10% of our gross profit to a local charity doing vital work in Kent.

For our July issue, we’ve chosen to support a cause that touches countless families but is often left unspoken: childhood bereavement. We’re honoured to partner with Slide Away, a Kent-based charity that’s been providing vital bereavement support for more than 20 years.

Who They Are

Slide Away supports children and young people in Kent and Medway as they adjust to a life changed by loss — whether that’s the death of a parent, sibling, or someone close. Their professional team offers a lifeline to families navigating the most difficult of times, ensuring children don’t feel alone in their grief.

Here’s how they help:

  • Creating Safe Spaces: Group sessions where children can express their feelings, share memories, and find comfort among peers who’ve experienced similar losses.

  • Empowering Families: Encouraging open communication at home, helping parents and carers talk about grief in healthy, supportive ways.

  • Working With Schools: Slide Away partners with schools to provide tailored support for bereaved pupils, offering training and resources to key staff.

The Power of Education: Project Eileen

Slide Away also supports Project Eileen, which delivers free, curriculum-based resources to help secondary schools educate students about grief and bereavement. These multimedia lessons are designed to:

  • Raise awareness

  • Destigmatise conversations around death

  • Encourage peer support

  • Build emotional resilience

  • Promote better mental health

These lessons not only help grieving students but equip all young people with the tools to support one another — a crucial part of creating compassionate school communities.

Why We Chose Slide Away

When we launched our Charitable Focus initiative, we wanted to spotlight organisations that often work behind the scenes but have a deep impact on our county. Slide Away does just that. Their work reaches children at their most vulnerable, helping them rebuild confidence, find their voice, and understand that grief doesn’t have to be faced alone.

One parent shared,

"Our daughter has said that she feels like a weight has been lifted from her shoulders. She’s now been able to talk with family members who have shared stories about Dad, which she’s enjoyed and benefitted from."

Another added,

“She’s learnt that talking about the death is ok — she won’t upset us, and it’s ok to feel sad. Others feel like her too.”

Giving Back Is Part of Who We Are

We believe magazines can do more than entertain — they can empower. Each edition of The Kent Review will feature a Charitable Focus section and support a different local cause, shining a light on the people changing lives across Kent.

This isn’t just a campaign — it’s part of our purpose.

Thank you for reading, supporting, and caring.
