Le Garrick, Covent GardenA Slice of Paris in the Heart of the West End

There are restaurants that feel like discoveries, even when they’ve been there for decades, and Le Garrick is one of them. Hidden just off Covent Garden’s bustle on Garrick Street, this long loved French bistro has been quietly serving locals, theatre-goers, and in the know Londoners for over thirty years. Step inside and you are instantly transported from the neon hum of the West End to something softer, slower, and unmistakably French.

Down a narrow staircase, the candlelight softens, and the atmosphere is romantic and nostalgic, with low ceilings, flickering candles, wooden tables, and Edith Piaf in the background. It’s not about glossy interiors or trend chasing design,  Le Garrick is about charm, warmth, and the kind of genuine hospitality that’s increasingly rare.

The menu celebrates the quiet pleasure of classic French cooking, needing no reinvention. The French onion soup is deep and aromatic, crowned with molten Gruyère that stretches silkily with each spoonful. The duck confit, with its crisp skin and tender, honey-glazed meat, is pure comfort,  especially when paired with a glass of La Chapelle de Marin, Côtes du Rhône, mirroring the dish’s richness beautifully. The Basque cheesecake is light, caramel-edged, and lingeringly good. Every dish feels thoughtfully composed, full of honest flavour and the quiet confidence that comes from doing the simple things beautifully.

Beyond the classics, the menu unfolds with all the charm of a true Parisian brasserie. Small plates of olives, Padron peppers, perfectly paired with a Kir Royal or a glass of Crémant from the aperitif list. Starters span from indulgent foie gras with homemade fig jam to comforting moules marinières, escargots, and the ever-popular chèvre chaud. For mains, familiar favourites like boeuf bourguignon, cassoulet de Toulouse, and confit de canard sit alongside lighter options such as salmon with ratatouille or the daily plat du jour. Even the sides, spinach, petit pois, or buttery mash  feel thoughtfully considered, designed to complete a meal that’s both hearty and full of heart.

What makes Le Garrick stand out, even in the heart of London’s theatre district, is its remarkable value for money; here you can enjoy a genuinely excellent two or three-course meal, a glass of wine, and change to spare  without ever compromising on quality or atmosphere.

Service is exactly as it should be,  relaxed, personable, and perfectly timed. The team glide between tables with easy charm. From pre-theatre suppers to late-night dinners, Le Garrick has a rhythm all its own,  lively, unpretentious, and unmistakably French.

So next time you’re catching a show in the West End, skip the glossy chains and follow the soft glow of candlelight down into Le Garrick. Because in this little pocket of Paris beneath the streets of Covent Garden, you’ll find everything you need, unpretentious and full of soul.
